The major activities of STV are:

  • Identifying and patenting or copyrighting new inventions
  • Interacting with industry to negotiate collaborative Sponsored Research Agreements (SRAs)
  • Advising industry of new inventions and negotiating license agreements
  • Apprising venture capital groups and other investors of new inventions and facilitating startup of new companies based on Columbia faculty research
  • Facilitating the Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) that enable researchers to advance their work

As Columbia University's technology transfer organization, Science and Technology Ventures (STV) serves as a bridge between Columbia's faculty and researchers, and the business community. STV's core objective is to transfer inventions and innovative knowledge from the University to outside organizations and society at large. Through technology transfer, innovations may be incorporated into products and services that directly benefit people across the globe. The University itself also benefits, as STV brings in much-needed revenue, enhancing the quality and breadth of research conducted at Columbia.
